Checking in again after a weekend trip to Houston, TX.
12.99 gallons got me 590.5 miles in my 2009 Civic LX (automatic), for an average of 45.458 mpg.
About 550 miles of this was highway driving, at speeds of 50-60 mph (depending on weather, road conditions, traffic flow, etc), with about 40 miles of city driving thrown in (I get about the advertised 25 mpg in the city).
I have my iDrive55 window cling posted on my rear driver's side window for passing cars to see.

This Real World Vehicle Efficiency Report is on a 2009 Toyota Corolla S rented for a trip in December 2008. This roomy, well appointed 4 door sedan is powered by a 1.8L 4 cyl engine with a 4 speed automatic transmission. It is an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II with an EPA estimated MPG of 27/35 and a starting list price of $15,350. It has a dashboard computer that monitors, records and reports MPG data and the odometer includes A and B trip recording. I topped off the tank, zeroed everything and set the cruise control at a notch or two over 55 MPH and over the course of 1,523 miles averaged 42.23 MPG, a 22% savings over the EPA estimate.

San Jose Mercury News columinst "Mr. Roadshow " (Gary Richards) took up a readers challenge that he wouldn't even save 20% by slowing down to 55 MPH and published the results in his column. Here are a few key quotes:
"I got 59.9 miles a gallon going 60 or under in our Prius compared with 42 mpg at speeds that would have made me prime bait for the California Highway Patrol."
"That's a staggering 42.6 percent improvement. I drove an extra 117 miles on a tank of gas by just slowing down. That's like lowering the price at the pump by more than a third - and about 10 mpg better than Prius EPA estimates."
"I calculated mileage the old-fashioned way: gallons used vs. miles traveled. The onboard computer reported slightly different results - 45.6 mpg at 75-plus vs. 58.4 mpg at 55 and under - but it's usually a little off. Still, that's a 28 percent difference."
And my favorite,
"But when I eased off the pedal and stuck to the right lane, I felt like I was sharing the road with others. Trucker merging in from my right: Here, friend, I'll slow and you can make that lane change. Driver ahead going slow? Excellent - the guy behind me may not tailgate as much."

From a Prius Yahoo group forum:
"Originally our recommendation would have been to keep your speed at 66 or less when on the highway, and that will increase your MPG, but now we would recommend 55mph.. We have found that we can get our mpg to climb beyond 54 if we keep our highway speed to 65mph, we now drive at 55mph on cruise control and we see the average fuel economy surge to 65+ mpg (and have one 220 mile trip at 68.8mpg). This ends up being a much more relaxing drive as well."

Many thanks for sending in your report!

However, driven sensibly, it can get greatly improved fuel economy! I use the truck to tow a small (20 foot) travel trailer, and at other times a small (21 foot) boat. The rig is well suited to this purpose. At 55 - 57 MPH towing the 3500 pound trailer the engine is only turning over at 1700 RPM. Loafing along.

In late October 2007 I rented an '08 Saturn VUE equipped with AWD, V6 engine & auto transmission that has an EPA rating of 15/22 MPG. I drove from Sacramento to El Cerrito, then to Sebastopol, Santa Rosa & Calistoga. From Calistoga I drove the winding road up to Lake County where I connected with Hwy 20 to Williams, then I-5 back to Sacramento. This 396 mile trip included city and highway driving. I obeyed posted speed limits and did not exceed 55 MPH with a few exceptions, such as on I-5 even at 60 MPH I was being passed by every other vehicle on the road, including big rigs doing 65 plus. The Saturn used 16.96 gallons of fuel for this 396 mile trip, which works out to 23.34 MPG, 1.3 MPG better than the EPA rating!

The hybrids that passed me were consuming more fuel.
This Real World Vehicle Report documents a 264 mile round trip from Sacramento to Guerneville, California on August 11, 2006. The rented 2006 Toyota Corolla 4 door equipped with A/C and a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine with automatic transmission carries an estimated MPG of 30 in the city and 38 on the highway.
As usual, in town I carefully obeyed all speed limits and when I was on the highway I set the cruise control at 55 MPH and occasionally hit 60 for brief periods. I turned the A/C system off and rolled the windows down about halfway instead. Though it was a warm day I was not unduly uncomfortable - especially when I thought about the citizens of Bagdad living with just 4 hours a day of electricity, and how uncomfortable that must be. Soon I was in the Bay Area and it was a cool 70 degrees anyway! So, by not using the A/C I saved another 20% of fuel.
The car was very comfortable and had lots of room. I took the wheels off my bike and the whole thing fit nicely in the trunk with room to spare. When I refueled it took 6.56 gallons and the odometer indicated I had driven 264 miles, which works out to 40.24 miles per gallon, or 40 MPG in this $12k-$15k car available to buy right now.
The hybrids that passed me were consuming more fuel.

V6 Cyl, 5 Spd Auto Trans, EPA 29/20
This RWVER (Real World Vehicle Efficiency Report) journey started in Sacramento, CA where I got on I-80 and drove east to the Hwy 12 exit towards Napa through the rolling hills of wine country through Sonoma and Santa Rosa to the Sebastopol, CA, area where I stayed overnight. The next day we drove to the coast, then went south on HWY 1 to Bodega Bay, where we again turned east to Hwy 101, south to Hwy 37, which took us across the Bay and connects with I-80 at Vallejo, which we took back to Sacramento.
