Letter to Amtrak Print E-mail

Dear Amtrak,

As a regular customer and noting the many Amtrak buses in use to connect passengers to their destinations I have a fuel saving idea to share. Why not have the bus drivers observe the truck speed limit of 55 MPH to reduce fuel consumption? With the corresponding reduction in climate change emissions, improved safety and passenger comfort I should think this simple measure well worth the minimal time penalty.

As a regular customer on these buses I routinely see operators doing 75-85 MPH. At this high speed I usually wind up with a bout of motion sickness as the result, and on one trip from Palm Springs to Bakersfield had a particularly bad experience that left me disoriented and badly nauseated.

I am the founder of the Drive 55 Conservation Project and have set up an informative website at www.Drive55.org. We have learned that putting a Drive 55 bumper sticker on a vehicle accomplishes three things immediately: Approaching vehicles are notified of the conservation minded driver ahead, the Drive 55 message is spread, and because no one wants to be a hypocrite it helps drivers moderate and lighten up on their "lead" right foot.

This is modern day alchemy, change the lead in your right foot into gold in your pocket by simply observing ALL speed limits, never exceeding 55 MPH. I have enclosed a couple of stickers and would be delighted to work with you on a heavily discounted bulk purchase.

Many thanks for your time and attention,

Tim Castleman
